Be wary of BBO Experts

Last week, it was a 3-1 fit.  This time was not so bad. I had signed up as a substitute on BBO and found myself partnering a BBO Expert.  This was the bidding that had me playing a 4-1 fit in hearts:

Silly me, to expect my expert partner to hold the majors.

  1. Hi Lakshmanan, check out: www.bboskill.com
here you can enter any bbonickname and get a calculated skill level, based on the performance at bbo. Of course, this isnt quite correct, because, if somebody plays always against strong opposition or with a regular partner against weak opposition, the calculated skill level will not be the true skill level.

    1. This is not true, like any software BBO Skill also has its drawback, but it is fairly accurate. The FAQ clearly explains how the skill level is calculated, for easy reference read this.
** How do you evaluate skill level of BBO players? **

Our skill system is based on BBO score. Every time you make request we keep data and through the time skill level and rating will be more accurate.

** What if I play only a few boards and make a really good score? **

We will calculate your skill and rating anyway, but if you played less than 1000 boards last month you'll get a notice about provisional rating.

** So, if I play with beginners and make good score, I'll be ranked as World Class? **

Not really. We make adjustment for every single hand you played depending on your partner's and opponents' skill. Playing with bad players just to make good score won't help you to improve your rating.

** But how do you calculate it? **

There is simple scale which tells your skill level depending on your overall score, with adjustments based on strength of your partner and opponents.

  2. I don't agree with the negative double, but at least I understand it. But 6 hearts? Wow, death wish.

  3. I don't think my "expert" partner meant it as a negative double. He probably thought it was penalty! And then when I bid 3H, I don't know what he thought.
